According to a recent report by the Evening Standard, Manchester United are on the lookout for a quality defensive option next summer and are still dreaming of signing Raphaël Varane from Real Madrid. The same report also mentions an interview with former Man United centre-back Wes Brown who revealed his opinion and said, “The dream defender for United would be Rafael Varane,”
“He would cost a lot and it would need to be the right fit for United.
“It’s difficult to say as United have a lot of defenders to choose from, and Solskjaer will want players to justify their positions on the pitch.”
The Evening Standard also states that the Red Devils were linked with a move for Varane last summer when Ed Woodward was ready to cough up £100m for the defender if Los Blancos were willing to do business. However, a move failed to materialise back then and now, the Mancunian giants could be set to re-visit the possibility of signing the French talent at the end of this campaign.
Varane is a world-class defender who has won a lot of honours with the Galacticos and the French national side over the past few years. If there is even the slightest chance to bring him to Old Trafford, United should go all out in pursuit of the French international as he could be the player who can come in and completely transform the club’s fortune for the better in the coming years.
The Lille born centre-back has made 26 appearances for the Spanish heavyweights this term and has one goal to his name across all competitions. He has made an average of one successful interception and 4.3 clearances per game which proves how valuable he can at the back.
The 25-year-old is a transcendent talent who could potentially line up for any team in world football. He is a competent defender who knows how to dominate his own box and also has the pace to make up a lot of ground when left isolated in 1v1 situations. Moreover, his ball-playing ability only adds more value to his team which means that he can the answer to all of Man United’s problems at the back ahead of the new season.
The likes of Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof have improved a lot under Ole Gunnar Solskjær in recent weeks. However, they don’t come close to the quality that Varane possesses as a defender. Thus, it is only logical for United to listen to Wes Brown’s advice and make an attempt to sign the La Liga defensive ace next summer.
The French centre-back might be a distant dream for United right now but things change quickly in football so if there is even the slightest window of opportunity for Woodward to sign him next summer, then he might become a realistic target soon.
