According to the reports from the Sun, Leeds United are going to target their former winger Aaron Lennon for a possible summer move if they move to the Premier League.
It is believed that Marcelo Bielsa is currently compiling a background check on the speedster as he is presently down with a knee injury. The winger last played for Burnley in mid-December, and the severity of his current injury could mean that he might not play any more part this season in the Clarets’ Premier League campaign.
Leeds saw a move for Swansea City winger Daniel James collapse in the last moments of the deadline day, and there is no doubt that the club needs to add a winger or two in their repertoire. However, a move for Lennon is going to divide opinions among the fans especially if the club moves to the Premier League by next season.
Lennon though was having a good spell with Burnley before his injury, and we feel that the Whites would have their hands on a decent and experienced winger if they secure a move for him. Also, we think that if the manager is comfortable about working with the winger, then the club faithful should trust the manager’s judgement here.
The winger has represented England at two World Cups and his wealth of experience of playing in the English top flight can come in handy for the club. Lennon had made 40 appearances for the Whites before he was snapped up by Tottenham in 2005 where he enjoyed the best days of his career. Lennon was a regular down the wings for the North London club, and he made over 360 appearances for them.
It’s true that the winger’s career has been on a downward curve off late and it would be interesting to see how he would cope up after his serious knee injury. However, if the Whites can negotiate a deal for him for a reasonable price, then this could turn out to be a smart signing for the West Yorkshire outfit.
Lennon’s strength has always been his pace down the flanks, and he was regular for Burnley before injury brought him down. The English winger has been bashed throughout his career for just being a ”pace merchant” as he often failed to produce the telling moment in the final third after getting into good positions. However, he can still be a decent bet for Leeds United as he has been for Burnley. The Whites though need to tread carefully and look to do a deal for him only when the winger successfully recovers from his ongoing knee injury.
