Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed a rollercoaster of a season so far. Mauricio Pochettino’s men had made a terrific start to this campaign only to fall behind during in the winter months after they suffered a run of poor results in the league. However, they have recovered well in the Premier League despite losing both Harry Kane and Dele Alli due to injury. The striking partnership between Heung-min Son and Fernando Llorente has worked well in recent matches while the recent form of Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld have also garnered a lot of praise.
Liverpool’s failure to pick up maximum points from their match against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Monday night has put Spurs in an excellent position to make a late push for the Premier League title. The North London outfit find themselves just 5 points behind the Reds with 13 matches still left to be played in the English top-flight this season.
If they can somehow manage to continue their good run of form over the next few weeks until Kane’s return from injury, it is likely that Spurs would be in a dominant place to challenge for the Premier League title.
There is no doubt that Pochettino’s side can still be genuine title contenders but only if they believe it themselves. Tottenham have shown in the past that they can get results against the bigger teams which means that they can potentially take points off both Liverpool and Manchester City if they can beat them at Anfield and the Etihad Stadium respectively later this season.
Moreover, Pep Guardiola’s side has also looked shaky in recent weeks which means that none of the top 3 sides are invincible and could be caught out if they get complacent and are not at the top of their game.
One thing that could help Spurs in the coming weeks will be their lack of involvement in other competitions, much like how Liverpool can solely focus on the challenge that lies ahead in the Premier League. Comparatively, the Citizens will have a far tougher challenge of coping with four different competitions which could pave the way for them to get caught out in the title race.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham can mount a realistic title charge this season, but people who are ruling them out because of their history of choking are being naive and should consider changing their opinion as Spurs have shown enough on the pitch to get more respect from their critics.
