Wigan Athletic’s Will Grigg has emerged as a primary target for Sunderland in this January transfer window. However, the Latics are becoming hard to deal with if you are a Black Cats supporter as the latest reports from Sky Sports indicates that Wigan have turned down a fifth bid for the striker as well.
The latest offer is said to be at £1.25m plus add-ons and with just a few hours remaining in the transfer window, Sunderland doesn’t seem any closer in securing a deal for this Northern Irish striker.
After the departure of Josh Maja, it is imperative for the club to add a striker or two and Grigg’s name has been doing the round for quite some time now. The Black Cats would be frustrated though as time is running out now and they might have to look at somewhere else to sign a new forward.
Ross had earlier admitted (Sunderland Echo) that they would like to bring the 27-year old at the Stadium of Light, but it seems like Paul Cook and their board aren’t going to budge. The Black Cats have been after the Wigan striker even before they had sanctioned a deal for Maja to Bordeaux and now we might see the League One outfit targetting two other strikers in the last moments of the transfer window (Our Opinion).
Maja was clearly the talismanic man for Sunderland as he had managed 15 goals in the first half of the season before jumping ship to join the Ligue 1 outfit. Replacing that many goals are never easy and Ross might need his midfielders and wingers to step up big time.
Grigg might not be the free-flowing maverick like Maja, but he would get the job done in front of goal more often than not. The forward managed 26 goals in all competitions in the last season as Wigan topped the League One table to secure a move to the Championship. In the English second tier, Grigg has failed to get regular game time and has started just ten games in this campaign. However, he has still shown potency in front of goal as he has four goals to his name.
Currently, the striker is out with an injury so that would be a matter of concern for Ross as well as they need a striker who can straightaway start firing on all cylinders. Grigg has the experience of over 250 games at the League One level, and he would be a fantastic signing for the club. However, with a fifth bid now being rejected, things would have to move quickly in the last few hours if the Wearside outfit wants to get their hands on their target. We believe Ross should give it another go to ensure they get their man before the transfer window closes.
