According to a recent report by talkSPORT, West Ham United are interested in securing the services of Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater on a loan deal before the transfer window shuts on Thursday night. The same report has also revealed that the Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is on the lookout for a new midfielder during this January transfer period and has identified Drinkwater as his number one option.
The former Leicester City talent has found game time hard to come by at Stamford Bridge this season ever since Maurizio Sarri took over the reins at the West London club last summer. The 28-year-old has made just one appearance for Chelsea this season when he came off the bench to feature as a substitute in Chelsea’s loss against Manchester City in the Community Shield back in August.
Drinkwater came through the youth ranks of Manchester United but failed to break into their first-team despite having loan spells at clubs such as Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City, Watford and Barnsley during his career at Old Trafford.
He was finally shipped out to Leicester City back in 2012. The English talent slowly rose to prominence at the King Power Stadium before helping them do the impossible by winning the Premier League in the 2015-16 campaign.
His incredible displays for the Foxes earned him a switch to Chelsea in the summer of 2017 where he has managed to win the Premier League title once again under Antonio Conte. However, he has recently seen his game time limited for Sarri’s team which has thrown his future at West London in doubt.
The Hammers will undoubtedly benefit from signing him this month as his past experience would be a valuable asset for them which could help them push for a top 6 spot in the coming years. Drinkwater would also add a lot of quality to the West Ham midfield which has lacked creativity in the recent past.
The likes of Pedro Obiang, Mark Noble, Declan Rice and Carlos Sanchez are all workhorses with Jack Wilshere being their only creative force in midfield. However, the English midfielder has been plagued with injuries this season, and so the addition of Drinkwater will be a somewhat risky one for the East London outfit in the near term.
