According to the latest reports from the Daily Record, Celtic are exploring a loan deal for Borussia Dortmund’s fullback Jeremy Toljan. The report adds that Dortmund have given the green light to the full back to look for a new club as he has struggled to get game time under new manager Lucien Favre. The Hoops had also scouted this right back previously and are now eyeing a deal for him.
Celtic have been linked with plenty of fullbacks in the last month or so and with just a few days remaining, it is time for the club to finalise a deal soon. Toljan has not started a single game this season for the Bundesliga leaders, and it is understandable why they are willing to let him leave. The fullback played a more integral part in the last season as he started 19 games for the German heavyweights.
The 24-year-old is also a former Germany u-21 international, and we believe this could be a massive signing for Rodgers if he can pull it off. Given his current situation, it is no surprise that Dortmund are willing to send him away as he is yet to make an appearance in the Bundesliga this season.
That might be a bad thing for Celtic though as the player could be short of match practice and he might take time to get back to his best. However, we feel the former Hoffenheim star can be a quality addition if he is fit and raring to go.
The 24-year-old has blistering pace (we aren’t exaggerating), and not many players in the Premiership would be able to match up with him. Toljan is a typical modern day full back as tries to go on the attack as much as he can.
There are some aspects to his game which might need improving but on face value, the Bhoys are going to get a proven player if they manage to pull off a deal for him. With Mikael Lustig and Cristian Gamboa in the final few months of their contract, the club needs to sign a right back soon. Moreover, if Celtic want to progress to the next stage of the Europa League, then they need an upgrade over Lustig who has been found wanting on previous occasions in Europe.
The club has been linked with plenty of right backs, and the fans would hope that the club will finally finalise a deal for a right back with just a few days remaining in the transfer window. Toljan is a player with experience in the German top flight and he should be a hit for Celtic given he was almost regular for a club of Dortmund’s stature last season.
