Rangers have been quite busy in the January transfer window as they have made as many as four signings so far. The experienced Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis joined in this window, and the Bears also secured the signatures of Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones on a pre-contract deal. However, if you are a Rangers fan and looking for some more business to be done by the club, then this piece of news is going to dampen your mood.
Steven Gerrard gave a clear indication (The Scottish Sun) that the club wouldn’t do any last minute shopping as the window nears it’s end. The Rangers manager was quoted as saying, ”No, I think we’re content, we’re satisfied. I’d be surprised if anything happens so we’ll go with what we’ve got. I’m very happy. We’ve got enough depth, we’ve got enough numbers and we’ve got enough quality. The challenge for us now is can we find consistency?”
One cannot expect too much from the club as doing business in January is never easy as none of the clubs wants their players to leave midway through the season.
So one can only get hands on players who have been on the fringes of the squad and that is what happened with the likes of Defoe and Davis as they were unable to get much playing time with Bournemouth and Southampton respectively.
The manager had earlier indicated (The Scottish Sun) in November that signing a no. 10 in the January window is going to be a priority for him as the team didn’t have any midfielder who is a natural no. 10. However, it seems like the club has given up on signing a playmaker. The likes of Scott Arfield or even new signing Steven Davis can play in that role, but that would not be their best position.
We think Rangers should keep their options open and things can move quickly in the last few days of the transfer window. If an opportunity arises, then they should go all out to sign that playmaker who can make a significant difference in the final third. Rangers didn’t start their second half of the season well as they went down to Kilmarnock, but they need to keep on applying the pressure on Celtic in case they slip up.
Rangers have now signed 19 players since Gerrard took over the club and that is a testament on how much the club has backed its new manager. Pulling off a deal for Defoe in this window is going to be a major highlight for the club, and it seems like the Gers are set to have a quiet last few days in the January transfer window.
