Sunderland manager Jack Ross has confirmed that they are actively pursuing Wigan Athletic’s striker Will Grigg. The Northern Irish international has fallen down the pecking order at the DW Stadium. The speculation regarding a possible move to the Stadium of Light has been going on for weeks, and the manager finally revealed that they are trying to sign him.
Reports from Sunderland Echo adds that Grigg has continued to be the no. 1 target even though Wigan have rejected the first two bids from the League One outfit. Wigan manager Paul Cook also went on to admit that Sunderland have even submitted a third bid for the forward.
On all these speculations Ross said, ”I’ve always been reluctant to comment on individual players. I’ve always been reluctant to comment on individual players. I know obviously Paul has done that at the weekend, so it’s made it obvious that we have made a bid for him. He’s a player that we would like to bring to the club. We have ten days left in which to do that, so it’s something we would obviously like to make happen.”
It’s clear as daylight now that Sunderland are going to try everything in their means to land this 27-year-old striker who was once a fan favourite at the DW Stadium. However, Sunderland fans might be worried about the signing of a new striker as that might mean the end of the road for Josh Maja.
Grigg though has been used sparingly and has started just ten games this season. However, he can still be trusted as in limited starts; he has four goals and an assist to his name. The 27-year-old is a smart poacher and has brilliant instincts in and around the box. He often looks calm when faced with a one on one situation with the goalkeeper and we feel he would be a decent signing for the Black Cats.
The 27-year-old has a plethora of experience of playing in the League One as he has over 250 appearances to his name. The striker played an integral role last season for the Latics when they topped the table and got back to the Championship. Grigg can play as a lone forward, or he can even partner up with someone and play as a secondary striker as his link-up play and movements are top notch.
Grigg would add competition for places, and his experience should come in handy for Ross. Given that he is still 27, the forward has plenty of football left in him, and maybe he can be part of two back to back promotion runs if Sunderland manages to sign him.
