According to a recent report by La Repubblica, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to battle it out with West Ham United to secure the signature of AS Roma forward Edin Dzeko during this January transfer window. The same report has also claimed that Spurs are on the lookout for a new striker who can stand in for the injured Harry Kane and have identified the Bosnian international as a potential solution to their striking concerns.
There are a number of season-defining matches awaiting Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the next few weeks so they would need a reliable goal-scorer in the absence of Kane who might not be back in action until March.
Dzeko has been a proven goal-scorer at the highest level for more than half a decade and could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for Spurs if they can somehow convince him to move to North London to take up a sporadic role under Pochettino.
The 32-year-old has made 20 appearances for the Serie A heavyweights this term, finding the back of the net seven times while also creating four assists across all competitions. He has also been a prolific goal-getter at the international level after representing the Bosnia-Herzegovina national team in 99 matches and scoring 55 goals during that time.
The former Manchester City striker will add a lot of quality to the Spurs attack, but it is quite challenging to imagine Pochettino opting to start with both Kane and Dzeko when the English forward comes back from his injury in a few weeks time.
Hence, it might be a move which could derail Dzeko’s career so he would be better off staying in Rome. However, for Spurs, it will be a massive coup if they can sign a striker of Dzeko’s quality before the end of this month.
The Bosnian frontman is vastly experienced and knows what it takes to succeed in the English top-flight. He had previously won the Premier League title twice and the FA Cup once during his time with the Citizens. So he will not only be a smart acquisition but will also be the perfect candidate to help Spurs challenge on all fronts for the remainder of this campaign.
