According to a recent report by Bild, Tottenham Hotspur have made a move to secure the services of Jonas Hofmann from Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The same report has also claimed that Spurs are willing to offer the German prospect four times his current salary with his contract at Leverkusen set to expire in the summer of 2020.
The 26-year-old has caught the eye with some dazzling displays at the middle of the park for the Bundesliga team during this campaign. He has featured in 15 matches for Peter Bosz’s side this term, registering six goals while grabbing seven assists in all competitions.
The German talent has also represented his nation at both the Under-18 and Under-21 levels but is yet to make his debut for Joachim Löw’s senior side so far.
The Heidelberg born midfielder came through the youth ranks of Hoffenheim before making a switch to Borussia Dortmund II on a free transfer in the summer of 2011. Since then, he had a loan spell with Mainz before his move to Leverkusen back in 2016.
Hofmann is speedy and is a very productive dribbler with the ball at his feet. He has slowly developed his game over the past few years and has a knack for scoring and setting up important goals. He could be a worthy option in midfield especially after the departure of Mousa Dembele earlier this month.
The addition of someone of Hofmann’s talents will undoubtedly bolster Pochettino’s midfield options at North London. The German will add more creativity to the Spurs midfield and will also be a decent goal-threat in the attacking third of the pitch. However, Tottenham already has the likes of Dele Alli, Heung-min Son, Christian Eriksen, Lucas Moura, Erik Lamela and Moussa Sissoko vying for a place in the Spurs starting XI. Hence, bringing in another similar option could backfire as it might hamper the morale of Pochettino’s squad.
Too many cooks will spoil the broth, so the North London giants are better off spending the money on strengthening other areas of their squad. Having said that, Hofmann could be a decent option if one of Pochettino’s attacking midfielders ends up leaving the club this month.
