According to a recent report by Tutto Mercato Web, Manchester United are interested in securing the signature of Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven during this January transfer period. The same report has also claimed that the Red Devils are willing to make an offer in the region of £25m (€28m) to bring the Dutch talent to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes at the end of this month.
Bergwijn came through the youth ranks of Ajax before joining PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2011. Since his move to the Philips Stadium, the Dutch prospect has worked his way up the youth ranks before finally establishing himself as a member of the senior team back in 2015.
The 21-year-old has been enjoying a rich vein of form of late after he put in a number of match-winning displays for PSV during this campaign. He has featured in 24 matches for the Eredivisie giants this term, scoring ten times while creating eight assists across all competitions.
At such a young age, Bergwijn has also represented the Netherlands at every youth level from Under-17 onwards. He has also earned three international caps for the Dutch national team during his young career so far.
The Dutch wonderkid has blistering pace and is an excellent dribbler with the ball at his feet when he runs down the wide areas in the opposition half. He has developed a habit of scoring and setting goals on a consistent basis as evidenced by his remarkable record this season.
The addition of someone of Bergwijn’s quality will be a massive coup for the Reds of Manchester. However, one could argue whether Man United are in need of another talented winger with the likes of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata already in their ranks fighting for the right to line up in Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s first-team. So Ed Woodward could be better off spending the money to strengthen other areas of the Red Devils squad.
Having said that, if the opportunity for a potential £25m move for Bergwijn arrises before the end of this transfer period, then the Mancunian outfit would be foolish not to do business for such a reasonable fee.
