According to the latest reports from Sky Sports, Celtic are negotiating with Manchester United over a possible loan move for their midfielder Scott McTominay. The Scotsman has failed to break into the United lineup under both Jose Mourinho or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and it is believed that the player is available on loan.
Rodgers was recently asked about the signing of the midfielder, and the Celtic boss added, ”There’s lots of speculation around players, so I wouldn’t comment. He’s a very good young player. When he broke into the team at Manchester United, I think he showed that. He’s a fantastic talent, but there’s nothing more to say.”
The manager might be playing it down, but this is not the first time that the Hoops have been linked with a possible loan move for him. Reports from Belfast Telegraph in October claimed that the Hoops were monitoring the midfielder’s situation and were interested in a loan move.
The 22-year-old has made just three starts in the Premier League this season, and it is clear that he would struggle for game time at Old Trafford. This can turn out to be a really smart piece of business from Rodgers as he should be aware that Scott Brown’s powers are waning.
The captain struggled big time in the Old Firm derby and that showed that he was way behind the pace of the game. Rodgers needs to bring in a strong and robust midfielder, and along with that someone who can pick out a pass or two and the Mancunian midfielder suits the bill perfectly.
McTominay is in a crucial phase of his career now as it’s been more than a year since he made his breakthrough in Manchester United colours. The 22-year-old needs to play regular football and he needs to pick his game up and reach the top level otherwise he would be shipped away from Manchester soon.
A loan move to Celtic is going to give him a chance to prove his worth and get some much needed minutes under his belt. If he goes on to impress, maybe he can have another crack at establishing himself with the English giants. But at the moment, it seems like his time at Manchester is slowly coming to an end.
Predominantly a midfielder, McTominay can double up as a defender as well. He reads the situation well and has the physical side to his game which makes him a strong contender to start at the back. All in all, this looks like a perfect fit for Celtic, and there is no doubt that Rodgers should do everything in his means to get this talented Scotsman to Parkhead this month.
