According to a recent report by the Mirror, Manchester United keeper, David De Gea has made it clear that he is prepared to pen a new contract at Old Trafford. However, it is expected that it would take a mega-offer for both parties to come to an agreement. Yet, the same report has also revealed that the recent signs have been positive and both sides are confident that a compromise could be reached between the player and the club.
The Red Devils activated a 12-month extension in De Gea’s contract back in November which will keep him at the Theatre of Dreams until the summer of 2020. However, the Mancunian giants would want to keep hold of their number one keeper for an even longer time as the Spaniard is widely regarded as one of the greatest shot-stoppers of this generation.
This recent development will be a huge boost for Man United and their hopes of challenging for major silverware in the coming years. De Gea has undoubtedly been United’s player of the season so far which goes on to show how vital of an asset he has been for the Reds of Manchester.
The 28-year-old has featured in 27 matches for Man United this term, conceding 34 goals while keeping seven clean sheets across all competitions. The former Atletico Madrid goalie has also earned 38 international caps for the Spanish national side during his career so far.
De Gea is blessed with outstanding reflexes which helps him pull off some world-class saves in goal for the Red Devils. He has singlehandedly kept his team in matches this season which was once again on display when the Spaniard pulled off 11 saves to deny Tottenham Hotspur a goal last weekend which helped United secure a hard-fought 1-0 win at the Wembley Stadium.
At 28, the Madrid born talent is an exceptional keeper who still has a lot of years left in him to play at his highest level. Ed Woodward should do everything in his power to convince the Spanish goalie to pen a new, long-term contract at Old Trafford so that both the club and the player can get rid of these distractions and focus on matters on the pitch.
Having said that, De Gea’s willingness to sign a new contract will be a big boost for United and their chances of holding on to their superstar keeper for years to come.
