According to a recent report by Marca, Atletico Madrid have begun talks with Chelsea to sign their Spanish forward Alvaro Morata during this January transfer window with the Spaniard willing to take a pay cut in order to go back to his youth club. The same report has also claimed that the Pensioners are looking for an £8m loan fee with an obligation to buy the striker permanently at the end of this season.
The 26-year-old has not been able to live up to the expectations of the Stamford Bridge faithful since making a £60m switch from Real Madrid in the summer of 2017.
Morata’s performances on the pitch have mostly been disappointing even though the Spanish forward has a decent record at the West London club this season. He has made 24 appearances for Maurizio Sarri’s team this term, scoring nine goals across multiple competitions.
The ex-Juventus forward has also managed to earn 27 international caps for the Spanish national team and has 13 goals for his country to his name. He rose to prominence during his time at Real Madrid so it makes a lot of sense for Morata to seal a return back to the Spanish capital but this time to play for Atletico Madrid.
Diego Simeone has built a reputation for signing prolific strikers as evidenced by the acquisitions of Jackson Martinez, Radamel Falcao, Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann in recent years. So it should give Morata some confidence that he could be the next big thing in Spain if he decides to make a switch to Wanda Metropolitano Stadium this month.
The Pensioners will be better off parting ways with the Spanish striker as soon as they possibly can so that they can make space for a new arrival in Sarri’s squad. Morata has been guilty of squandering a lot of easy opportunities in front of goal which has cost his team a few points in the Premier League this season.
The Spaniard’s departure could be a good move for all parties as the player will undoubtedly benefit from returning to his homeland while Simeone’s team will also acquire an underperforming talent who could potentially be a hit in the La Liga. However, the biggest winner of this deal would be Chelsea as they try to cut their losses on the player and move on from their recent frustrations over his form up top.
