According to the latest reports from the Sun as cited by Leeds Live, Leeds United are set to target Swansea City winger Jefferson Montero for a possible loan move this month. The Whites have been ruling the roost in the Championship this season as they currently occupy the top spot. However, they should definitely look to add depth to their injury-hit squad.
Montero is an Ecuadorian international and has been with the Swans since 2014. Therefore the winger even has experience of playing in the Premier League. However, he has struggled to nail down a regular spot in the playing eleven under Graham Potter, and United should look to pounce on this promising winger.
The 29-year-old is a pacy left winger and not too long ago, Marcelo Bielsa gave an indication (Leeds Live) that they could do with a winger as Pablo Hernandez is playing in central areas ever since the departure of Samuel Saiz. With all the injuries taken into consideration, the Whites should go all out to add depth to the wide regions, and Montero would fit the bill well.
However, the winger is really inconsistent, and one doesn’t know which player would turn up on a particular day. On his day, his pace and directness can wreak havoc, but there are going to be occasions when he would be a frustrating player to watch. On the other hand, he still has that natural talent in him and on a loan spell, this move sounds alright to us.
If Bielsa can take control of him and bring the best out of him, the winger can trouble a lot of defences. Even in the Premier League with the Swans, he had made some influential displays, and all he needs to add to his game is a bit of consistency.
The Ecuadorian has the experience of playing in 66 games in the Premier League and has over 50 appearances in the La Liga as well. The fact that the Whites are looking to sign him on a loan spell makes this move less risky. In any case, United are in desperate need of a winger. However, Bielsa had indicated that he would only add players if they improve the quality of the squad.
Montero can be a big hit as an impact substitute as well, and we believe Bielsa can turn him into an impressive talent at Elland Road as he has all the raw ingredients to thrive in the Championship. Therefore the Whites should look to pull off this move this month.
