According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Liverpool are not looking to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Pascal Gross during this January transfer window. The Reds were previously linked with a move for the German talent, but it has now been revealed by BBC Radio Merseyside sports editor, Ian Kennedy that Jurgen Klopp is not interested in acquiring the Seagulls star this month.
The Daily Star also mentions an interview where Kennedy was asked about whether Liverpool are still interested on Gross to which he replied, “Not really, I have to say.
“Obviously a very good player.
“The thing with Jurgen Klopp though, he never discusses transfers.
“As soon as someone mentions a rumour in a press conference, he completely shuts it down and says ‘we don’t talk about it’.
“He’s pretty good at not giving you any information.”
Kennedy’s recent revelation shouldn’t come as a surprise especially considering the Brighton playmaker penned a new four-year deal at the Amex Stadium last summer. The 27-year-old had a sensational campaign last term when he scored seven goals and created eight assists for the Seagulls on his debut Premier League season.
However, his form has taken a dip this term, and he is no longer a guaranteed first-team starter under Chris Hughton. Gross has made 15 appearances for Brighton during this campaign, finding the back of the net just once while grabbing two assists across all competitions.
The Mannheim born talent is an accurate distributor of the ball and has shown a lot of creativity as part of the Brighton midfield. He has an eye for a defence-splitting pass while he can also be a potent goal-threat from midfield. However, Gross has struggled to find consistency with his performances on the pitch this season which could be one of the reasons why Liverpool are no longer interested in securing his services.
The Reds are already quite full in the midfield department with the likes of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, Naby Keita and Adam Lallana all vying for a midfield berth in Klopp’s starting XI.
Hence, it could be the right move for the Merseyside giants to not take a chance on a player who is clearly out of form at the moment. Moreover, Liverpool have got enough depth in midfield and should instead concentrate on strengthening other areas of their squad.
