According to a recent report by the Daily Mail, Liverpool are monitoring the progress of Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back Conor Coady. The same report has also revealed that the Reds are hoping to bring the English defender back to Anfield but could face stiff competition from Arsenal in pursuit of his signature.
Coady grew up playing football for his boyhood club, Liverpool and worked his way up the club’s youth ranks. However, he couldn’t manage to break into the Reds first-team and had to leave Anfield in search of more game time.
Huddersfield Town decided to sign him back in 2014 for whom he put in a number of commanding displays at the back. His contributions did not go unnoticed as Wolves finally decided to bring him to the Molineaux Stadium in the summer of 2015.
Since making a switch to the West Midlands club, Coady has managed to establish himself as a regular starter in Nuno Espirito Santo’s first-team. The 25-year-old centre-back has featured in 24 matches for Wolves this term, and his stellar displays in defence have helped his team climb to the 11th place of the Premier League table, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
Coady is a good organiser at the back and can make well-timed challenges to win the ball back for his team. Moreover, he is quite comfortable playing out from the back which would suit Jurgen Klopp’s style of play at the red half of Merseyside. The addition of someone of Coady’s talents will undoubtedly improve Liverpool’s squad depth. Klopp already has a plethora of defensive talents at his disposal which includes Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.
The Merseyside giants have been plagued with injuries in defence this season so Coady’s potential acquisition will add some much-needed depth to Klopp’s backline. The Reds boss decided to play Fabinho out of position in recent matches while he also opted to bring on Ki-Jana Hoever during the FA Cup game against Wolves earlier this month which highlights the need for a new centre-half.
The English prospect knows the club well and is a local lad so the Reds shouldn’t have too many problems convincing the defender to seal a return back to Anfield in the near future.
