There is no doubt that Rangers seem to have the upper hand when it comes to bringing in Liverpool players on loan and latest reports from the Scottish Sun indicates that the Gers are once again set to target Ben Woodburn for a possible loan move this month. Steven Gerrard was interested in him in the summer, but the Wales international joined Sheffield United. However, he struggled to get going, and as a result, his loan spell was cut short.
The 19-year-old attacker is also wanted by a host of Championship sides and according to reports, the likes of Blackburn, Brentford, Hull, West Brom and Wigan are interested in him. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also open to letting the attacker leave on loan so Rangers should fancy their chances to sign him the second time around.
Woodburn usually starts down the left flank, but he can do a job as a no. 10 as well. Given his eye for goal and creativity, the attacker is more suited to play in more central areas. The 19-year-old could be that attacking midfielder the Gers can go after to solve their woes.
Gerrard had earlier indicated (The Scottish Sun) that he needs a natural no. 10 and the manager would have seen the Liverpool man from close quarters as he was the manager of the u-18 team not too long ago. Woodburn is Liverpool’s youngest ever goalscorer and has also made waves with the Wales national team.
However, his development has been halted in the last one or two seasons as he hasn’t been able to break into the senior team. The Reds would have hoped that shipping him to the Championship might give him more game time, but even with Sheffield United, the youngster failed to get regular playing time and as a result, he returned back to Liverpool
The youngster is currently struggling with an ankle injury, and a possible move can also come down to how quickly he can recover from this setback. We have already seen what an impact Ryan Kent has made so far this season, and Woodburn too has the potential to do that. However, there is one area where Woodburn might struggle, and that is his physicality.
The Welshman is definitely on the lighter side and sometimes he can be shrugged off the ball a bit too easily. So he would have to work a lot on that front to be successful in the Premiership. However, in terms of abilities, he has the talent and Gerrard can certainly look to bring him on loan.
