According to a recent report by talkSPORT, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a move to secure the services of Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers. The same report has also stated that Spurs need to table a sizable bid if they are to convince Wolves from parting ways with their prized asset.
Doherty has been enjoying his football at the Molineaux Stadium this season and has become one of the most integral members of Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad. He primarily operates as a right-wing back and is fond of hugging the right touchline and delivering some dangerous crosses into the box. The 26-year-old has also got a knack for making late runs into the box and some of his goals this season has actually been because of his hunger to get in front of goal.
The Dublin born defensive ace has made 23 appearances for Wolves this term, scoring three goals while grabbing four assists across all competitions. He has also earned five international caps for the Republic of Ireland national team during his career so far.
At 26, Doherty is currently playing at his peak which could benefit Spurs if they can orchestrate a move for his services. The Republic of Ireland prospect played an instrumental role in Wolves’ title triumph in the EFL Championship last season when he helped them earn a spot back in the Premier League.
However, Mauricio Pochettino has already got two quality right-backs in his squad at North London. The likes of Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier have both caught the eye when they have been handed some game time on the pitch. However, Doherty’s arrival could give rise to more competition for places within the Tottenham squad, but it could also upset Pochettino’s apple cart at the North London club.
The Argentine manager has built a fantastic relationship with his current squad of players and so if he signs someone in a position where the club is already well-stocked in, then it could send out the wrong message to his players which would indicate that the manager might have lost faith in their abilities. Hence, Spurs are better of opting against a move for Doherty as they have already got two quality right-backs in his squad.
