According to a recent report by Tuttomercatoweb, Arsenal are looking to secure the services of FC Porto midfielder Hector Herrera at the end of this campaign.
However, the same report also claims that the Gunners will face stiff competition from the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, AS Roma, Inter Milan, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid in pursuit of the Mexican international next summer.
The Liga NOS midfielder has enjoyed a rich vein of form of late and has put in some excellent displays for FC Porto during the course of this campaign. He has made 28 appearances for the Portuguese outfit this term, scoring three times while providing one assist across multiple competitions. He has a knack for finding the back of the net from midfield which is why so many top European clubs are looking to land him in the summer.
The Mexican playmaker also has a wealth of experience at the international level, having secured 70 international caps for the Mexican national team. He has registered five goals for his country so far. At 28, Herrera is playing at his peak right now, so this could be the right time for him to seal a switch to a big club like Arsenal in search of more challenging adventures.
The Tijuana-born sensation is a midfielder who can do a little bit of everything while operating in a holding role at the centre of the park. He primarily plays a deep-lying, defensive midfielder but is quite capable of playing in a more attacking role for his team. Herrera has had a steady rise to the top of European football so the Premier League wouldn’t faze him at all if he does decide to move to North London next summer.
The acquisition of someone of Herrera’s talents will undoubtedly bolster Unai Emery’s midfield options at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners have a whole host of promising midfielders in their squad such as Lucas Torreira, Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi and Mohamed Elneny who are fighting for a starting berth in Emery’s first-team.
However, Aaron Ramsey’s decision to leave on a free transfer at the end of this campaign would mean that Arsenal will have some space in their squad for a new midfielder. Hence, someone like Herrera could come in and add something different to the Gunners midfield.
Moreover, the Mexican talent will also be an experienced head in the Arsenal dressing room so he could be a positive influence for other players in Emery’s squad. Hence, the North London outfit should go all out in pursuit of Herrera as acquiring his signature next summer is a battle well worth fighting for in the end.
