Rangers recruitment drive doesn’t seem to be stopping as latest reports from the Daily Record indicates that Steven Gerrard is set to go for Derby County’s midfielder Craig Bryson. The 32-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Rams, and the midfielder also admitted that he could look for a move away soon.
He was quoted as saying,”I’ve got six months left of my deal. If they don’t come to me with anything, then it’s time to move on. As it stands, that’s something that could happen.”
Reports also add that Rangers are looking to pull off a free deal here; somewhat similar to what they did with Steven Davis.
It is believed that Gary McAllister is the one who has insisted on this signing and has convinced Gerrard to go for this former Kilmarnock midfielder. Derby Chairman Mel Morris is looking to cut down on the wage bill, and Bryson could be let go this month as he hasn’t been offered a contract yet.
It is surprising to see the Gers going after another midfielder when they have already sealed a deal for Steven Davis. Bryson wage demands are likely going to be sizeable, and Gerrard doesn’t need to add another 30 plus midfielder to the squad. The midfielder was on loan to Cardiff City last season where he played a decent part in their promotion to the Premier League.
The Bears have also secured a deal for Glen Kamara who has already signed a pre-contract agreement and there again Rangers are looking to bring (Daily Record) him to Ibrox this month. Bryson has been at Pride Park since 2011 and is currently the longest serving player at the club. The midfielder has made over 250 appearances for the Rams and has also won ‘Fans player of the year’ award twice. However, he is not at his former best, but he can still do a decent job in midfield.
If Bryson would have been that attacking midfielder who would have added goals and assists to this side then the deal would have made sense. However, Bryson is going to be in a similar mould as the other midfielders that the Gers have currently as they have got the likes of Ross McCrorie, Ryan Jack, Scott Arfield and Lassana Coulibaly.
Davis has already added more depth to that and a deal for Kamara can also go through given the current situation. Bryson’s signing wouldn’t bode well for someone like Graham Dorrans who is currently struggling with injuries and has his contract at the club until 2020. Therefore Gerrard shouldn’t look to pull off this deal as they have other areas to look after.
