Rangers had brought Andrew Gutman and Matt Polster on trial at Glasgow and Polster has continued training with the Gers first team. Recent reports from the Scottish Sun confirmed that the 25-year-old travelled with the team for the club’s warm weather training camp in Tenerife. It is believed that the coaching staff at Rangers are impressed with what Polster has to offer and are continuing to assess him before handing him out a contract.
Gerrard had previously played with Polser when he joined LA Galaxy in the latter stages of his career. When the Bears brought him on trial, the gaffer was quoted as saying,”We have a couple of trialists from the US who are looking for the next challenge in their career.”
”I know one of them from my time in the MLS – Matt Polster, who played for Chicago Fire and who I know is a good player. Andrew Gutman is one from the college system and is very highly thought of. So we’re going to have a look at the two of them for seven or eight days. We’ll see how they do. If we like them, we’ll try and do it as soon as possible.”
Polster has continued training with the team even beyond the trial period, so it seems likely that the club is considering signing him this month. The 25-year-old has experience of playing in the Major League Soccer with Chicago Fire where he had over 90 appearances for them. His contract with the American outfit expired at the beginning of the year and the midfielder might be looking for his next big break in his footballing career.
Polster is a versatile player as he can play as a fullback or as a midfielder. He has a good work rate and his ball carrying abilities make him a decent bet. The 25-year-old is also a big fan of Gerrard and considers him as his idol as evident from this Instagram picture which he took with the current Rangers boss in 2016.
The American international might take some time to get used to the physicality and tempo of the league. However, if Gerrard and co find him good enough to train with the first team, then Polster is definitely doing something right.
A signing like this might not make an instant impact in the first team but this could turn out to be an intelligent piece of business from the Bears. It remains to be seen whether Polster would be a Rangers player by the end of this transfer window.
