According to a recent report by Don Balon, Liverpool are interested in securing the services of James Rodriguez, who is currently playing at Bayern Munich while on loan from Real Madrid.
The same report has also revealed that there is an option in the player’s loan contract to turn his move into a permanent one but the Bayern chiefs are reportedly reluctant to activate that option at the end of this campaign leaving the door open for the Reds to swoop in for the Colombian international.
Rodriguez has often been underwhelming with his performances on the pitch this season, but he has still managed to put in some match-winning displays at the Allianz Arena which has given the Bayern fans some hope of a major turnaround in the Bundesliga title race. The German giants are currently sitting in the second place, six points behind the league leaders, Borussia Dortmund.
The Munich-based outfit needs the Colombian winger to fire on all cylinders over the next few weeks as they look to make up some ground in the league. They would also hope to stand up to the challenge of facing Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League next month.
There is no doubt about Rodriguez’s world-class talent but he has been plagued with injuries recently which is why he is not guaranteed starter for Bayern anymore. The Colombian’s game time needs to be managed nowadays, but he can still be a match winner off the bench.
Rodriguez has scored three goals and grabbed two assists in 11 appearances for Bayern this term across all competitions. He has missed the bulk of this campaign due to a severe knee injury. The Bayern sensation also boasts a terrific international record with the Colombian national side after scoring 21 times in 66 international matches for the South American nation.
The acquisition of someone of Rodriguez’s quality will undoubtedly bolster Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options at Anfield. However, with Real Madrid still owning the player while Bayern also exploring the possibility of signing him permanently, it’s difficult to see why Liverpool will work hard towards signing a player who has struggled with injuries recently.
Moreover, at 27, he is not a player who fits the Liverpool owner, Fenway Sports Group’s goal of going for young and talented players in the transfer market who would add long-term value to the organisation. So we simply don’t see the value in getting this signing done for Liverpool.
