Rangers are once again on a roll in the transfer market as they have wrapped up yet another signing as Steven Davis has now joined Ibrox on a six-month loan deal from Southampton. The interest for the former midfielder began last year, and from the Gers point of view, it has come to a fruitful end as they have a very experienced midfielder at their disposal in this very tight title race.
It’s clear that Gerrard doesn’t want to leave any stones unturned as they are level with Celtic on the points table having played a game more. Getting a player who knows a thing or two about winning titles should come in handy, and Davis can have a significant impact in the Rangers dressing room.
The 34-year-old seemed delighted with his return to Ibrox and said the club’s official website,”I’m delighted to be back and looking forward to getting started. It’s been a little while in the making but when I found out the club was interested, this is the one that I wanted to happen.”
On working with Gerrard, he said,”He is an icon for any young player coming up and likewise for myself as well. I’m sure I’ll learn a lot from him and he’s obviously done a fantastic job in the six months he has been here.”
In his first spell, the midfielder was part of the side which won three league titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups. To go with that, he was also part of the squad which reached the 2008 UEFA Cup finals only to lose to Zenit St. Petersburg in the final.
There is no doubt that Davis will bring a lot of steel and determination in the squad. Along with that, the veteran can be a leader on and off the pitch and up until last season, he was captaining the Saints in the Premier League. Rangers have got a great deal as they did not spend anything on the midfielder. Our guess is that Davis would join permanently after this season is over.
In a tight title race, an experienced man like Davis can come in handy as he would know the pressure of a title charge. Along with that, the midfielder can provide the much needed creative output on the pitch. The Northern Ireland international might not play every game but he can still do a top job in midfield.
After Ovie Ejaria’s departure and the woeful form of Lassana Coulibaly, it was important for Gerrard to bring in a midfield general to provide backup to the likes of Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack and Ross McCrorie. This is a decisive and intelligent signing from the Gers which should boost their chances in their title race with Celtic.
