According to a recent report by the Telegraph, Paris Saint-Germain could offer Thomas Meunier in a swap deal in order to bring Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Toby Alderweireld to the Parc des Princes next summer.
The same report has revealed that Spurs have recently activated a clause in the Belgian’s contract which extends his stay at North London by 12 months. However, it also means that he will have a £25m release clause next summer until two weeks before the closure of the next transfer window.
So it is no surprise that an elite club like PSG are interested in acquiring the Belgian defender’s signature at the end of this campaign. Spurs could potentially get Thomas Meunier in return, but with the likes of Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier in good form along with the rapid emergence of Kyle Walker-Peters, there is no need for Mauricio Pochettino to sign a new right-back.
Meunier has been in a rich vein of form for the French outfit this season after scoring three goals while creating four assists in 16 matches across all competitions. The Belgian full-back has also managed to earn 35 international caps for his country and has six goals to his name so far.
It is evidenced by his recent record that Meunier has developed a knack for scoring important goals which has been clearly on display when he found the back of the net with a smart finish against Liverpool at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League earlier this campaign.
One might argue that Meunier could be an upgrade over Aurier due to his goal-threat and so he will undoubtedly add more competition for Trippier and Walker-Peters in the race to secure a starting berth at right-back in Pochettino’s starting XI.
Despite all this, Spurs just cannot afford to lose a player of Alderweireld’s potential without putting up a proper fight. Hence, they should do everything in their power to secure the Belgian’s long-term future or sell him to the highest bidder in an attempt to regain as much money as possible before going back into the transfer market in search of a worthy replacement. For now, Pochettino should just concentrate on matters on the pitch and deal with Alderweireld’s future when the time comes next summer.
