According to a recent report by German publication Kicker, as stated by the Express, RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has given the club’s German forward, Timo Werner an ultimatum by telling him to pen a new deal or risk being moved on to another club next summer amidst interest from Liverpool. The same report mentions a recent interview with the Kicker, where Mintzlaff said, “Of course we have to know at the latest after the end of the season,”
“A club like us cannot afford to go with Timo Werner in a final contract year.
“It’s logical that such a player should be courted by clubs that have a very different sporting perspective and different financial possibilities than we have.
“But as long as we develop as a club, and of course the Champions League participation would be very helpful, I believe that Werner is still in good hands with us.
“If Timo does not strive for the highest possible salary, then it would be a good investment in his sporting future.”
Mintzlaff’s recent comments make a lot of sense as Leipzig cannot afford to let Werner run out his contract and would undoubtedly explore the possibility of selling him to the highest bidder next summer if he does not pen a new contract extension with the Bundesliga outfit. However, one club’s loss could be another team’s gain as Jurgen Klopp looks to bolster his Liverpool squad even further with the potential acquisition of Werner who will add a lot of quality up top.
One might argue that the Reds have been over-reliant on the front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah and their ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis over the past couple of years. Hence Klopp needs to recruit a fresh face who can ease the workload for the trio in the coming years, and Werner fits the bill perfectly.
The German forward has electric pace and is a very potent dribbler with the ball at his feet. Werner has developed a habit of beating the offside trap on his way to making some well-timed runs into the opposition penalty box. However, his most prominent trait would be his ability to score goals on a consistent basis. The 22-year-old has featured in 21 matches for the Bundesliga team this term, scoring 13 goals while creating three assists in all competitions.
The Leipzig frontman would be a superb acquisition for Klopp if he can somehow mastermind a move to bring him to Anfield. Werner’s strengths will only grow under Klopp’s tutelage at Merseyside so Liverpool should consider acquiring his services in the summer if the striker decides not to extend his spell at Leipzig.
