Steven Gerrard’s Rangers are once again busy in the transfer market after the summer window where they brought in as many as 15 players. The recruitment hasn’t even properly started yet, and Rangers have pretty much secured a deal for Jermain Defoe. To go with that, latest reports from the Herald adds that the Gers are closing in on a pre-contract agreement for Kilmarnock winger Jordan Jones who will make the switch to Ibrox at the end of the current season.
Jones has been linked (The Scottish Sun) with an Ibrox switch for quite a while now, and even last year, in the January transfer window, the Bears tried to lure him but had their bid turned down. The player even went on to admit that not making the switch that time messed with his head.
He was quoted as saying (The Scottish Sun),”Yes, it does affect you. It is mental torture (transfer rumours), really. You are getting told a lot of things and trying to concentrate on football but it is draining. Through those two transfer windows were two of the worst times in my life.”
Jones is predominantly a left winger but can even play in a more central role as an attacking midfielder. The Gers do have decent depth in the left wing spot as they have the likes of Ryan Kent, Eros Grezda and Glenn Middleton who can currently play down the left wing. But Kent is currently on loan and there is no guarantee that the Gers would be able to land him in the future. Jamie Murphy too would make a claim for that place once he becomes fit by next season so one shouldn’t be surprised if Gerrard sees Jones as someone who would play in the central areas.
The 24-year-old is a tricky customer to handle down the flanks and he has been a crucial player for the Killie over the years. The winger was even linked (The Sun) with a move to the Premier League outfit Burnley so one can gauge his abilities from that as well.
However, the fans might be slightly worried about Kent’s situation if Gerrard goes on to seal a pre-contract deal with Jones. The good thing though is that the Northern Irish winger is going to come in for free so the Gers should have decent money to launch a raid for Kent in the summer.
Rangers have been aggressive in the transfer market ever since Gerrard took over and it shows the ambition of the club and where they want to be. This is going to be a decent acquisition for the Bears as Jones is a perfect mixture of youth plus experience and he should thrive at Ibrox.
