Former Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam launched (Daily Record) a come and get me plea in November, and the Gers were being linked with him. However, if latest reports from the Scottish Sun is to be believed, then Hearts of Midlothian are eyeing a January deal for the veteran midfielder, and rumours about a move to Rangers has taken a back seat at the moment. The report does add that Hearts’ interest might bring in other Scottish clubs in the race for him, but we highly doubt that Rangers would be keen on him.
Adam was part of the Gers side which enjoyed a considerable amount of success, and after his impressive stint, the midfielder later moved down south to join Blackpool where he impressed further.
He got his big break to move to the English top flight where he represented Liverpool and played with Gerrard. However, the midfielder wasn’t able to cut the mustard at the Merseyside club and was sold after just one season.
The 33-year-old is definitely past his prime, and even though the Light Blues might be in need of a creative midfielder, we feel Adam is not someone who can solve that problem. In the current setup, Gerrard has instilled the quality of working hard off the ball which Adam might not be able to provide. Even in his prime, the Scotsman was not known to have the best of work rates, and we don’t see him fitting into the current setup at the moment.
Rangers have struggled for options in midfield of late as Ovie Ejaria decided to cut short his loan spell at Ibrox. The midfielder returned back to Liverpool. To go with that, Lassana Coulibaly’s form in the past two months has been awful, and Graham Dorrans is still struggling with injuries. So even though the Gers started with a good set of midfielders at the beginning of the season, Gerrard has limited options at the moment.
However, we believe the Bears should let Hearts have this signing in the winter transfer period. Rangers are also being linked (Sky Sports) with another one of their former players, and that is Steven Davis. The Southampton midfielder seems in much better shape to return to the Premiership, and he was a regular for the Saints even last season.
Adam has played just 55 minutes of football in the Championship for Stoke City after their relegation and we don’t see him having a second stint at Ibrox even with all his experiences under his belt. Gerrard should look to aim higher in the market and Adam doesn’t fit the bill at the moment.
