According to a recent report by Tuttomercatoweb, Manchester United are looking to secure the services of AS Roma defender Kostas Manolas during this January transfer window. The same report goes on to claim that the Red Devils are lining up a €36m offer for the Serie A centre-back, but they could face stiff competition from Paris Saint-Germain in pursuit of the Greek international’s signature.
Manolas started his career playing for the Greek outfit, Thrasyvoulos Fylis before opting for a move to AEK Athens back in 2009. After spending three years at the Greek capital, the Naxos born defensive ace made a switch to Olympiacos in 2014 where he rose to prominence making 74 appearances with six goals and two assists to his name.
His outstanding contributions for the Greek heavyweights saw him become a two-time champion back in his homeland while he also won the Greek Cup winner’s medal twice during his spell at the Karaiskakis Stadium. Roma decided to bring him to Italy in the summer of 2014 where he has now become one of the best defenders in the Serie A.
The 27-year-old has been in sensational form for Eusebio Di Francesco’s team and has already put in some powerful defensive performances at the Stadio Olimpico during this campaign. The Greek talent has made 21 appearances for the Italian giants this term and has two goals and one assist to his name in all competitions.
Ole Gunnar Solskjær has made a perfect start to life at Man United after being named as the club’s interim manager for the remainder of this campaign last month.
The Norwegian manager has won all three of his matches that he has taken charge of at the red half of Manchester. However, there are still some concerns regarding United’s defence with the English giants currently struggling to keep clean sheets in the Premier League.
The addition of Manolas will undoubtedly bolster Solskjær’s defensive options at Old Trafford. The Reds of Manchester currently have just two fit central defenders in their squad, so they are in dire need of some reinforcements during this winter transfer period. Manolas is quick, strong, athletic and is a very capable defender which makes him a shrewd acquisition if United can lure him to Manchester this month.
