Latest reports from the Express suggests that Celtic have secured a loan deal for Paris Saint Germain forward Timothy Weah until the end of the season. This could be seen as a significant coup for the Hoops as Weah is considered as one of the brightest young talents around at the moment. The deal is likely to be completed by the end of this week.
The 18-year-old has already made senior team appearances for PSG but has struggled to get regular game time. It is clear that he would find it hard to make it to the first team given that the French heavyweights have the likes of Neymar, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Kylian Mbappe. Therefore going on a loan is definitely the right decision from youngster’s point of view.
Weah is already an American international and he has a big name to live up to as his father is former Ballon d’Or winner George Weah. Weah senior was also a player for PSG in his heydays and Timothy too should want to break into the team in a few years time.
For that to happen, the 18-year-old needs to impress in his loan spells and he would have a perfect opportunity to showcase his worth when he turns out at Park Head.
What can he bring to the table?
Weah has searing pace to burn, and not many defenders would be able to match up with him when he is on song. Given that he is so young, Weah needs to work on his decision making in the final third and that could only come with playing regular football. He is likely to deputise for Odsonne Edouard as Rodgers doesn’t have an out and out striker in his arsenal apart from the Frenchman.
The youngster’s versatility to play on the flanks can also come in handy, and we might see him being used on the left in place of Scott Sinclair as the Englishman has had a patchy season so far. Signing a striker was a necessity for the club especially after Leigh Griffiths took some time off football to concentrate on his personal matters. It is not yet clear when the Scotsman would be available so getting a deal done for a striker early in the January market is a job well done by Rodgers and Co.
Where he might find it hard?
The American international is slightly on the lighter side, and that might make it hard for him to adapt to the physicality of the Scottish Premiership. It remains to be seen how he would cope up with such challenges.
