Alfredo Morelos might earn a few headlines for being the bad boy of football, but it’s clear that without him Rangers would not have been in the title race. The Colombian striker has managed 20 goals and ten assists in 33 games in all competitions and one has to see the Gers play to know how dependent they are on the 22-year-old striker.
With Morelos being so important to Rangers’ chances, selling him January shouldn’t even be a question at the moment but recently the striker talked about his future and didn’t rule out the possibility of him leaving Ibrox.
He told Blu Radio’s Sports Deportivo programme, as quoted by the Daily Record: “It’s very likely there are several teams looking at me and that there will be offers, but there is nothing concrete yet. I have to wait until the last game of the year is played and will try to end 2018 in a positive way. My dream is to play in the English Premier League. It’s very similar to the football in Scotland. I know that if I continue like this by scoring goals with Rangers, a new opportunity will come.”
The fact that he is already talking about a new opportunity suggests that he would be open for a move especially if that comes from a Premier League club. In the summer, the Colombian attracted interest from French outfit Bordeaux but Gerrard was able to keep hold of his man.
However, that might not be the case when a Premier League outfit comes calling for him and to be fair to Morelos; there is nothing wrong in dreaming of playing in one of the best leagues of the world. Gerrard though had already said (The Times) that Morelos isn’t going anywhere but if an English top flight club comes calling, things could get interesting.
However, we think that quite a few clubs would consider Morelos as a gamble at the moment given his antics on the pitch. The Colombian is always a darling of the referees in terms of getting booked and he never shies away from an altercation or two with the opponents.
So maybe the Premier League clubs might want to wait and see whether he could improve himself on the temperament front in the next few months. However, his numbers in front of goal and his overall performance would keep them interested.
Obviously, Rangers need to keep hold of Morelos in January. It is likely that he doesn’t have a long-term future at Ibrox and Rangers can get a healthy sum for the Colombian when they decide to sell him. Hopefully, from the Gers point of view, no English top-flight club comes calling for him next month as from Morelos’ words it seems likely that he would jump ship if that happens.
