Latest reports from the Daily record indicates that Celtic are looking to target Paris Saint Germain striker Timothy Weah in January for a six-month loan deal. Brendan Rodgers earlier acknowledged that the Hoops need to sign a striker and indicated that he could sign as many as two strikers next month.
Odsonne Edouard was signed by the Hoops in the summer from Paris Saint Germain for a record fee, and the Scottish giants can once again look toward the French heavyweights to bolster their attacking options. It is no surprise that Weah has failed to earn a starting place in the star-studded lineup of Paris Saint-Germain. Last month, the striker himself conveyed (Daily Mail) that he is looking for a possible loan move in January.
He was quoted as saying (Daily Mail), ”Right now I’m not playing, but I’m always looking to improve, doing extra stuff and just watching the other guys and learning from them. Just waiting on my turn and hoping I’m going on loan soon.”
The American international has played just 53 minutes of football in Ligue 1 this term, and there is no way that he would be able to dislodge the likes of Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria and Neymar from the starting lineup (realistically speaking).
The striker is the son of former Ballon d’Or Winner and football legend George Weah. Weah senior is currently the president of Liberia, and he had also represented the French heavyweights in his heydays. His son would also like to establish himself at PSG but that seems unlikely at the moment and going out on loan spells can revive his career with the reigning French champions.
The Hoops had lost Moussa Dembele on the final day of the summer transfer window, and as a result, they never had the opportunity to bring in a replacement. Recently, Leigh Griffiths decided to take some time off football for an indefinite period, so Brendan Rodgers is currently down to just one out and out striker in Odsonne Edouard.
Michael Johnston stepped up in the few games when Edouard was injured but its clear that the Bhoys needs to go in for a striker in January. Weah can be a decent bet and he has the ability to play anywhere across the final third. However, it’s clear that Rodgers is looking at him as a striker.
The forward has immense pace and has decent finishing skills. However, he could be tested on the physical front in the Scottish Premiership, and it remains to be seen how he would handle himself when faced with such a challenge. The fact that it’s a loan deal means that there aren’t many risks involved for Rodgers and Weah can be a decent short-term solution at Celtic Park.
