Rangers are expected to make some more signings (The Express) in the January transfer window after being very active in the summer transfer window. Steven Gerrard recently confirmed that Rangers have brought in ( Las Vegas Review-Journal) Matt Polster for a trial in Glasgow. The 25-year-old is a right back and is highly rated in the Major League Soccer circuit. Gerrard had previously played against Polster when he joined LA Galaxy in the later stages of his career.
Polster already has 90 appearances for his side Chicago Fire and is looking for the next big break in his footballing career. The full-back suffered a major injury this year in May and had missed most of the season so far because of a surgery.
He is currently in the final year of his contract with the MLS outfit and it remains to be seen whether he would be able to break through at Rangers. Along with Polster, the Gers have also brought in Andrew Gutman on trial.
Polster’s asset is his versatility as he can play in the role of a midfielder as well. On his arrival, Gerrard was quoted as saying (The Scottish Sun),”We have a couple of trialists from the US who are looking for the next challenge in their career, so we were asked if we want to have a look at them.
“I know Matt Polster and played against him in the MLS and I know he’s a good player. If we like them, we’ll try and do it as soon as possible. One is a left-back and one is a central midfielder.”
Given that Polster is already 25, he is not one of those young prospects. In 2016, the American international posted a picture on Instagram where he clearly states that Steven Gerrard is his idol and we can only imagine that playing under him would be a dream come true for the versatile fullback.
The Gers currently have James Tavernier as their right back and he also happens to be the club captain. The 27-year-old has attracted interest from various clubs so maybe Gerrard is preparing to look at Polster as a contingency plan. However, we expect the Gers to keep hold of Tavernier until and unless there is a major offer for the defender.
Gerrard also has Jon Flanagan at his disposal who can fill in the right back spot when required. So, at the moment, there is no desperate need of a right-sided fullback at the club. However, we believe Gerrard might be attracted by the player’s versatility to play in midfield. It remains to be seen whether the USA international would be able to impress Rangers during this trial period.
