Newcastle United are in dire straits in the Premier League at the moment as they are increasingly finding it difficult to get past their opponents. The Magpies are currently stranded in the 15th position on the points table and are preparing themselves for a possible relegation battle if things don’t take a positive turn in the second half of the season.
With a number of his key players failing to perform on a consistent basis, Rafa Benitez has a big fight on his hands to ensure survival in the Premier League. Moreover, there has been still no sign of any takeover talks at the club. So, the Spaniard would have to keep his faith on Mike Ashley as he eyes a few fresh faces to be included in the side this January, one of them being the Bundesliga starlet Jetro Willems.
As per Mail Online, the 24-year-old left back is on Newcastle United’s radar. The Dutch defensive ace currently plies his trade for the Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt and has made a name for himself with his solid defensive skills. The player joined the Bundesliga side in the summer for something around £4.5m plus add-ons from PSV Eindhoven.
In the current scenario, the move looks decent for the Magpies as their defence have entirely been at sixes and sevens so far this season. Rafa Benitez’s side have already conceded 22 goals and are in dire need of a player of Willems’ stature, as a player like him would bring a world of solidity to the backline with his physicality and agility.
Besides being a defensive beast, the player also has the capability to move the ball forward and get his darting runs in to deceive the opposition defenders. Willems’ accurate passes and crosses have helped him notch up two assists this season already. This would make the defender a handy addition to the Newcastle United side if they can land him.
With on-loan Chelsea left-back Kenedy not being able to replicate his performances from the last season and Paul Dummett struggling with injury issues, signing the 24-year-old Dutch defender Willems would be an ideal thing to do for Benitez in the January transfer market. Willems will not only provide the Magpies with a solid physical presence in the defensive department but would also help them add some significant depth to their attack on the wings.
While staying away from the relegation zone is the priority for Benitez, he also needs to keep an eye on increasing the depth of his squad in every department possible. However, it is to be seen whether Mike Ashely would invest anything to help his side seal the deal for any significant signings.
