Jordan Jones of Kilmarnock has been a long-term target for Rangers, and various reports (The Daily Record) are doing the round that the Gers can once again go after him in the January transfer window. However, Killie manager Steve Clarke is confident (The Scottish Sun) that Jones is set to stay at Ayrshire until the end of his contract in the summer.
Clarke admitted that Jones doesn’t have a long-term future at Kilmarnock but believed that he is going nowhere in January. The fact that he is in the final year of his contract has brought so many speculations regarding his future, and even English top flight club Burnley are credited (The Sun) with interest in him.
The Killie boss was recently quoted as saying, ”Jordan is in a great position and he holds all the aces. His contract runs out in the summer and he is available on a free transfer. This window we don’t have to sell — and we don’t want to sell.
“He is enjoying his football and in the last few weeks, he has come back to something approaching his best form. He has been great for us and I look forward to working with him until the end of the season. Then his career might go in a different direction.”
Jones is predominantly a left winger but can even play in a more central role as an out and out no. 10. The Gers does have the likes of Ryan Kent, Eros Grezda and Glenn Middleton who can currently play down the left wing but Kent is currently on loan and there is no certainty that the Gers would be able to land him permanently in the future.
Jamie Murphy is also going claim a place on the left wing when he becomes fit by next season so it remains to be seen how keen the Gers would be to land him in January as they don’t need an immediate winger in their squad. But Gerrard can even be looking at Jones as an attacking midfielder so that way the Gers might want to complete a deal early in January instead of waiting until the summer.
However, Clarke’s comments clearly suggest that he isn’t likely to sell his star man and rightly so as none of the teams would like to lose their prime players midway through the season. With Premier League club like Burnley also lurking around, Gerrard has a tough decision to make. We would suggest Gerrard try his luck in January for this 24-year-old winger and if things don’t pan out, then he can always look for a move in the summer.
