According to the latest reports in the Greek media outlet SDNA, AEK Athens defender Vasilios Lampropoulos is in advanced talks with a mystery foreign club for a possible move in the January transfer window. The report also adds that Rangers have shown an interest in him and indicated that the mystery club could very well be the Glaswegian giants.
Lampropoulos moved to the Athens based club in 2014, and the 28-year-old has firmly established himself as the main centre back of the side. The defender played in the Champions League this season where the Greek outfit got eliminated in the group stages.
The defender has gained prominence late on in his career as earlier he never really established himself with clubs like Asteras Tripolis, Ethnikos Asteras and Panionios. However, now he is an essential member of the Greek heavyweights as he has made 16 appearances in all competitions this season.
The centre-back is currently in the final year of his contract, though the Greek outfit have the option to extend his deal by another year. It remains to be seen whether the Greece international would continue playing in his homeland or move away for a more significant challenge abroad.
The Gers have definitely come up leaps and bounds under Steven Gerrard, and they are very much in the race for the Premiership title even though they trail Celtic by one point currently. They also made it to the Europa League group stages after four gruelling rounds of qualifiers, and their defence undoubtedly played a significant part in that.
However, the likes of Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley are only on a short-term deal and both of them would be unavailable after this season. That would leave the club with only two reliable options in the form of Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson. Therefore signing a defender could be a priority for the club in the long run, so it is no surprise that Gerrard is going to be after one in the January window.
Lampropoulos has a decent amount of experience, and the fact that he has played in the Champions League before should stand him in good stead in the Scottish Premiership. He definitely has that physical and robust side to his game which is often demanded in this league. The Bears should go after him in January, and there is a very bright possibility that it is Rangers who are the mystery foreign club looking to pull off a deal for this AEK Athens centre-half in January.
