It was an exact rematch of the quarterfinal from last season’s Carabao Cup as Manchester City got the better of Leicester City on penalties. The regular 90 minutes witnessed the Citizens go up 1-0, courtesy of a brilliant solo effort from Kevin De Bruyne, as he picked up his first goal of an injury-stricken season. However, Claude Puel made some intelligent changes in the second half as the resurgent Foxes came back strongly into the match with a cool finish by Marc Albrighton.
The match went into penalties and the Foxes missed three on a trot to send their opponents into the semi-final as all the Manchester City penalty takers barring Raheem Sterling converted from the spot.
Here is how the Manchester City players were rated in their win against Leicester City.
Arijanet Muric: 7
Had a quiet time in the first half. However, in the second half, the Leicester City attackers peppered his goal with shots from all over.
Kyle Walker: 7
Made some good runs with the ball down the right flank and delivered pinpoint passes with no one taking advantage.
Eric Garcia: 7
Played an important role in keeping the goal safe as he made crucial blocks and interceptions throughout the match.
Nicolas Otamendi: 6
Looked a bit shaky in the second half after having a brilliant first half.
Oleksandr Zinchenko: 6
Did well as the left-back once again, especially with his attacking intent. However, was caught on the counter while backtracking as he allowed Albrighton to take advantage of the acres of space left unguarded as he levelled the scoreline for the Foxes.
Kevin De Bruyne: 8
Brilliant composure and ball control in the middle of the pitch as he brought up his first goal of the season.
John Stones: 6
Was caught off guard on a few occasions in the second half but did well overall in his new role as a defensive midfielder.
Phil Foden: 6
His sharp turns with the ball in the midfield were good enough to deceive the opposition midfielders. However, he lacked the physicality as he lost battles against Wilfred Ndidi and Vicente Iborra.
Riyad Mahrez: 6
Did well to get the ball into the danger area quite a few times but lacked the finishing.
Brahim Diaz: 6
Combatted well against the big defenders like Caglar Soyuncu and Harry Maguire but could not trouble the keeper Danny Ward.
Sergio Aguero: 6
A rather quiet night for the Argentine marksman as he could not get the better of the opposition defenders. Was substituted in the second half.
Substitutes
Raheem Sterling: 6
Did well with his pace and skill. Gave the Manchester City supporters a mini heart attack as his panenka went over the top of the crossbar from the spot.
Ilkay Gundogan: 6
Did well in the limited time he got on the pitch but could not dictate terms in midfield like David Silva or Fernandinho.
Gabriel Jesus: 6
Troubled the defenders with his quick feet and sublime skills but could not find the back of the net. Was accurate from the spot during the penalty shootout.
