Latest reports from the Scottish Sun indicates that Southampton are not going to stand in the way of Steven Davis if the midfielder wants to leave the club in January. Rangers have been linked with their former player for quite some time now, and after this latest piece of development, it seems likely that the Gers would get their man.
Davis is currently in the final year of his contract, and it is believed that although the Saints could demand a fee for him, they are willing to let him leave for free as a thank you gesture for his services at the St. Mary’s.
Southampton’s new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is planning a clear out of the squad in January and said,”Think the squad is very big, so we have a lot of positions where we have too many players and maybe one or the other is leaving us and we can bring in something new.”
The Northern Ireland captain left Rangers in 2012 to pursue a more lucrative footballing stint down the south and over the years, he has played a significant part in making the Saints a steady top-flight club. Davis has always kept the option of coming back to Ibrox open. Not too long ago a Rangers fan asked him whether he would be back in Glasgow to which he replied (Via The Scottish Sun), “Hopefully one day, hopefully.”
The midfielder had an illustrious first spell with the Bears as in 4 seasons he was part of the squad which won three league titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups. Along with that, he was also part of the team which reached the 2008 UEFA Cup finals and lost to Zenit Saint Petersburg.
This has been a season of reunion for the Light Blues as Kyle Lafferty, and Allan McGregor joined the club for their second spell in the summer. Now Davis looks very much on the radar after Southampton gave him the green signal to return to his former club in January.
Gerrard can do with an experienced head like him in midfield and even at the age of 34 (which he is going to turn in the new year), Davis can do a top job. He can also be that creative spark in midfield which the Gers are missing. The likes of Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly have struggled with a loss of form of late and Davis can be a quality addition in midfield even though the Bears have plenty of options.
Davis might not play every game but he can bring the squad together, and a move like this would also delight the fans. Until last season, the midfielder was a regular in the Premier League before Mark Hughes took over. He should still have a few years of football left in him.
