Rangers have done well this season to challenge Celtic and compete in the Europa League, but there are still some areas where they might need improvement even after making 15 signings in the summer. Amidst all the new signings, talented 22-year-old midfielder Greg Docherty was sent on loan down south to Shrewsbury Town to get more game time. It’s fair to say that the Rangers man has impressed so far in his outings.
The Scotsman has made 21 appearances this campaign for the English third-tier club and has managed six goals and four assists. Recently he opened up about the possibility of returning to Ibrox next month.
He was quoted as saying (The Sunday Post),”As far as I’m aware I have signed for the season at Shrewsbury Town. I don’t know if there is an option to take me back to Rangers next month. I’m aware there has been some chat on the internet about it, but I honestly couldn’t tell you. However, it’s nice that people are taking notice of what I’m doing here.”
”When I joined Shrewsbury in the summer it was with the intention to be here for the season, get as many games as possible under my belt, and go back to Rangers a better player and a stronger person. It goes without saying I keep an eye on every Rangers result and I’m willing the club on every day to be successful. My long-term plan is to be a first-team player at Rangers. That’s my aim.”
The likes of Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly have underperformed in the past month and getting Docherty back won’t be a bad idea. However, his game time would be hampered given the current competition for places at Ibrox, so it is very likely that he is going to stay put in Shrewsbury until the end of the season.
Gerrad recently went on to indicate (The Scottish Sun) that he could go after a proper no. 10 in the January transfer window. We believe after Docherty’s loan spell is concluded, someone like him can be tried in that role given his attacking returns with Shrewsbury at the moment. It’s good to see that the player is keen on proving himself at the Ibrox and is still looking to play for them even though he was sent on loan.
The Bears have the likes of Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans, Scott Arfield, Andy Halliday, Jordan Rossiter, Ross McCrorie along with loan recruits Ovie Ejaria and Lassana Coulibaly as options in midfield so one cannot blame Gerrard for letting him leave. With Coulibaly and Ejaria only here at Rangers on a loan deal, Docherty can have a role to play next season if he continues impressing with Shrewsbury in the English League One.
