According to a recent report by the Sun, Manchester United have identified Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino as an ideal replacement for Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford and are ready to cough up £40m to bring the Argentine head coach to the red half of Manchester. The same report has also claimed that there is a clause in Mourinho’s contract which would cost the Red Devils less money to sack Mourinho if United does not qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.
Spurs have made a solid start to their Premier League campaign and currently find themselves in the 3rd position of the league table despite their struggles off the pitch surrounding the move to their new stadium.
Pochettino has also managed to keep his team in the UEFA Champions League for now even though his side managed to claim just a single point from their first three group stage matches in the competition.
There is no doubt that Pochettino is a very talented manager who has made the best out of the limited resources made available to him at North London. His net spend at Tottenham over the past three years is considerably less when compared to the other top clubs in England. Despite spending so little, he has managed to build a team capable of challenging for major trophies and so it shouldn’t be a surprise that a big club like Man United are interested in recruiting him.
However, one flaw that has often been associated with Pochettino is the fact that he is yet to win a major trophy at Spurs. Since his move from Southampton in the summer of 2014, the Argentine tactician has taken charge of 240 matches for Tottenham, winning 136, drawing 51 and losing 53 of those games with a healthy PPG (Points Per Game) average of 1.91 (Stats taken from Transfermrkt).
He is one of the most successful managers in Tottenham’s history so the North London outfit cannot afford to let him leave, especially not to one of their top 4 rivals. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy needs to find a way to keep Pochettino happy at Spurs so that they can work towards a successful future in a few years’ time.
No matter the cost, Spurs should do everything in their power to retain the services of their head coach Pochettino for the coming years as he has been the architect behind their recent success. This really is a no brainer for the Spurs board and we think Levy is a smart enough man to understand this.
