On-loan Derby County winger Harry Wilson has enjoyed a fantastic run of form since making a loan switch from Liverpool last summer. The Welsh starlet has caught the eye with some majestic displays at Pride Park during this campaign. He was a part of Jurgen Klopp’s pre-season squad earlier this summer, and there was some hope that the Reds would keep hold of him this season, but Klopp decided not to risk hampering his development and send him out on a season-long loan to play for the East Midlands outfit.
The Wrexham-born prospect has featured in 18 matches for Derby this term, scoring eight goals while creating two assists across all competitions. Derby boss Frank Lampard has managed to get the best out of his talents, and it now feels like he could be ready for some Premier League action next season.
In a recent interview mentioned in the Express, Wilson shared his plans for the future and said, “When you look at the attacking talent at Liverpool it’s awesome but you’ve got to be confident in your ability otherwise you have no chance.
“It’s always going to be difficult to break in to a team with big stars like Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane. But I trained with those guys for over a year before I went on loan to Hull in January and it raised my game.
“When you get a chance on loan you have to shine so when I do go back I’ll be in better shape to impress the manager.”
It seems clear from Wilson’s words that he is confident about his chances of breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI in the following campaign especially after the success that he has experienced so far at Pride Park this term.
The Welsh sensation has developed a habit of scoring important goals and has struck up a great partnership with Mason Mount in the Derby midfield during this campaign. Wilson still has a long way to go if he wants to help the Rams claim a promotion spot at the end of this season, so a lot will ride on his ability to continue his excellent form over the next few months.
Jurgen Klopp is not afraid to give some of his younger players a chance if they are good enough. The rapid rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez should be a shining example for any Liverpool loanee hoping to prove their worth at Anfield next season.
Wilson is undoubtedly good enough to feature for the Reds in a few years time, but for now, he needs to concentrate on improving his talents on the pitch and help Derby gain some success under Lampard’s tutelage. All said and done (given the state of the Liverpool midfield), we can conclude that if Wilson can keep up this form, there is a realistic chance of him breaking into the Liverpool midfield next season.
