Liverpool clashed heads against their local rivals Everton at Anfield earlier this evening looking to bounce back from their midweek defeat away at Paris Saint-Germain. The Reds began the match with a lot of intensity but couldn’t capitalise on their early chances. The Toffees came back into the game and squandered some good opportunities of their own to go into half-time with a 0-0 scoreline.
Both teams battled hard in the second half but struggled to make the breakthrough. However, in the dying embers of the game, Divock Origi followed in on a lost cause and got rewarded with a last-gasp winning goal. The Reds ended up getting maximum points from this contest in what turned out to be a dramatic Merseyside derby at Anfield.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed during the game against the Toffees.
GK: Alisson Becker – 8/10
The Brazilian keeper pulled off some world-class saves to keep the Everton attackers at bay and earned a well-deserved clean sheet on the day.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 7/10
The English full-back delivered some dangerous crosses from the right flank and was a handful for Lucas Digne in the Everton half.
CB: Joe Gomez – 9/10
The Liverpool centre-back made a match-saving challenge in the first half with his goal-line clearance and also put in a commanding shift in the second half.
CB: Virgil Van Dijk – 8.5/10
The Dutchman won a lot of headers during the game and distributed the ball with impeccable accuracy to secure another shut-out at Anfield.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 6.5/10
The Scottish international was full of energy down the left wing but got exposed on a few occasions with Theo Walcott running behind him.
CM: Fabinho – 6.5/10
The Brazilian talent did the dirty midfield work but lacked the creativity required to open up the Everton defence.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 7/10
The Dutchman worked his socks off in midfield and won a lot of 50-50 duels at the centre of the park.
CAM: Xherdan Shaqiri – 6.5/10
The Swiss sensation managed to create a few good chances for the front players but squandered a fantastic opportunity in the first half to make a breakthrough.
RM: Mohamed Salah – 6/10
It was a frustrating night out for the Egyptian international. He lacked the sharpness inside the opposition penalty area but did create a few good opportunities for his teammates in the final third.
LM: Sadio Mane – 5/10
The Senegalese was a real threat for the Toffees defenders throughout the match but was woeful with his finishing. He will be counting his lucky stars that his team got the win even after his dismal showing.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 6.5/10
The Brazilian gave away the ball quite a few times, but he remained positive to create some good chances for the Liverpool wingers.
Substitutes:
CM: Naby Keita – 5/10
He failed to make an impact in the game after coming off the bench.
ST: Daniel Sturridge – 5/10
The English forward looked a threat but lacked the cutting edge in the attacking end of the pitch.
ST: Divock Origi – 9.5/10
The Belgian forward just had a few minutes to make an impression. He refused to give up on a lost cause and won the lottery for his efforts by scoring the winner of this Merseyside derby with his header from close range.
