Liverpool have made a fantastic start to their Premier League campaign after going unbeaten for 13 matches so far. The Reds currently find themselves in the second place in the Premier League table, just two points off the table toppers, Manchester City. However, their Champions League form has been woeful, to say the least, in recent weeks. The Merseyside outfit is in real danger of missing out on a round of 16 spot following three successive away defeats in Europe this season.
One of the main reasons for their recent downfall has been the lack of creativity going forward. Jurgen Klopp has a lot of hard-working, box to box midfielders at his disposal but none of them have been able to create chances from midfield which has seen the likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah often drop deep to act as a facilitator and struggle in the attacking third of the pitch.
Jurgen Klopp is in dire need of creative talent in midfield so that the Reds can gain some momentum in their efforts to mount a serious title challenge to Manchester City. Here are three midfielders Liverpool could look to recruit during the winter transfer period.
Ivan Rakitic
The Barcelona midfielder has been a consistent presence in Ernesto Valverde’s midfield over the past couple of seasons. The Croatian international is a very talented midfielder who knows how to create chances for his teammates while also possessing the ability to find the back of the net from long range. At 30, he still has a few years left in him to play at a high level so the Reds should consider moving in for him as he will be an immediate short-term fix to Klopp’s creative woes at the centre of the park.
Dimitri Payet
The French playmaker has put in some eye-catching displays in the Ligue 1 since making a switch from West Ham United last year. He is arguably Marseille’s most valuable player due to his creativity and intelligence in midfield, and his recent record has been remarkable. Payet has made 18 appearances for the French giants this term, scoring six goals while grabbing six assists in all competitions. The French international could be a shrewd addition to Klopp’s team as he still has a lot left in his locker even at the age of 31.
Daniel Parejo
The 29-year-old is one of the best distributors in the La Liga right now as his passing range is exceptional from midfield. The Spanish talent will be an ideal facilitator for the Reds as he could play as part of Klopp’s midfield three and act as a linchpin between the defence and the attack. Parejo is vastly experienced at the highest level which would be an added bonus for a relatively young Liverpool squad.
