As per reports from the Scottish Sun, Rangers are set to reignite their interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ right back Dominic Iorfa who is currently struggling to get any sort of game time at the Molineux.
The fullback has come up the ranks from Wolves’ academy, but Matt Doherty’s impressive display has kept him on the sideline. It is believed that he can be available for as less as £500,000 and that is the reason why we believe the Hoops should keep track of this Rangers target.
Right back is one of the areas which the club might have to solve in the upcoming transfer windows. Mikael Lustig is the current first-choice option in that position, but the Sweden international has been under par in his performances for quite some time now. Given that Celtic dominate the proceedings in the Premiership, the experienced defender isn’t tested much defensively but is often found wanting against quality opponents and especially in Europe.
Lustig is currently in the final year of his deal, and Rodgers recently gave an indication (Daily Record) that the club could offer him a new contract. Given that the other right back Cristian Gamboa is also in the final year of his contract, the club cannot let two players from the same position leave at the same time. Therefore, it makes sense for the club to offer a new deal to Lustig. However, we believe the club should look for another quality right back, and Iorfa could be the answer for the Bhoys.
The 23-year-old was a regular for England at the u-21 level and is looking for the next big break in his career. Given Wolves’ ambition, he might not get many chances as he is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League this season. The club could look to sell him in January instead of losing him for free in the summer.
Iorfa can also double up as a centre back when required. His pace and physicality are his major assets, and we believe he can cause devastation down the right flank with his forward runs. The right-back isn’t too shoddy while defending as well and he could be the long-term answer for Celtic’s right back problems.
The Hoops recently lost out on Swansea City’s Connor Roberts (The Daily Record) as he decided to extend his deal with the Welsh club. Lustig is definitely past his prime and continuing with the 31-year-old as the first choice option beyond this season wouldn’t make sense. Therefore the club should look to lure the Wolves defender to Park Head by beating Rangers to his signature.
