Latest reports from the Scottish Sun states that Rangers are set to reignite interest in Wolves right back Dominic Iorfa in January after failing to land him in the summer. The 23-year-old hasn’t made a single appearance in the Premier League so far, and the West Midland club could look to sell him given that he is in the final year of his deal.
It is believed that the Gers can have him for as less as £500,000 though Wolves are going to include a clause which would see them get a certain percentage of the fee when the Bears sell him in the future.
The 23-year-old has come up from Wolves’ academy and was touted heavily a few years back as he was a regular for England at the u-21 level. However, given the club’s ambition, Iorfa has found himself out of favour of late. With someone like Matt Doherty as the first choice option, Nuno Santo is finding it hard to give any kind of game time to Iorfa.
The fullback spent the last season on loan with Ipswich Town, but that didn’t bring him anywhere near the first team spot at the Molineux. Rangers can look to add him as a backup option for club captain James Tavernier. The Rangers right-back has drawn interest(Daily Record) from Premier League club Brighton, so maybe Gerrard is playing it safe by bringing in a cover in the winter period.
Given Tavernier’s ability, while going forward, clubs from England would surely find him attractive, and Gerrard has also said that he would be willing to sell his players if he is offered the right price. However, with Gers showing promising sign this season, Tavernier should stick with the club until the end of the season.
Gerrard also has Jon Flanagan who is naturally a right back but has had to fill in the left-back role in the absence of Borna Barisic. However, someone like Iorfa would be a significant addition for the Bears and given that he can be available on a cut-price deal in January, signing him makes sense. He can be a good backup option for the time being, and in case Tavernier leaves in the future, Gerrard wouldn’t have to worry much about his replacement.
The Englishman has bursting pace, and not many defenders would be able to cope up with him in the Premiership. His ability to also turn out as a centre back when required could also be a major asset for Gerrard who is likely to lose Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley at the end of the season. We believe Iorfa has all the elements to be a big-time success at Ibrox and Gerrard should go all out for him in January.
