According to Calciomercato as cited by Football London, Bayern Munich are keen on a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s South Korean winger Heung Min Son. The German giants are struggling this season and are currently 5th in the Bundesliga. Many consider the primary cause of their downfall to be their ageing squad, and Niko Kovac could make some big money signings in January to solve some of that issue.
The Bavarians still depend heavily on their 35-year-old winger Frank Ribery who usually starts down the left, and it’s clear that the Frenchman isn’t having the same kind of impact which he used to have 2-3 seasons back. Son, on the other hand, is flying high with Spurs at the moment and is one of the most crucial players for Pochettino in the attacking third. His wonder goal against Chelsea oozed class, and the Bavarians can have a real talent in their squad if they manage to sign the South Korean in January.
However, Spurs have Son tied up until 2023 at the moment, and we expect the North London club to demand a huge price given that the South Korean is currently in the prime of his career. When he was signed in 2015, not many could have thought he would have this kind of impact, but in three years the forward has really impressed in his time at White Hart Lane (Wembley of late).
His versatility to play anywhere up front should also attract Niko Kovac and what makes the Korean even more of an asset is that he had proven his worth in the Bundesliga before. The 26-year-old played for Hamburg and Bayern Leverkusen before moving to England to play in the Premier League.
Son had 135 appearances to his name in the German top flight and had produced 41 goals and ten assists. Now that he has realised his full potential, we believe he can hit even better numbers playing in a team like Bayern Munich.
Spurs have come a long way as a club in the last decade, but they still don’t seem to have that extra gear to clinch and win important titles. That could be one of the major reasons why some of their primary players in the past looked for a move away, and Son could also be on that list.
However, Pochettino should lock the South Korean down on a new and longer contract if required and listen to no offers from Bayern Munich in January. His pace and directness creates a lot of trouble to the defenders, and he is often the game changer for his manager.
Losing him mid-season can be a significant blow, and even though many don’t consider Spurs as genuine title challengers, they are definitely keeping up with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool at the moment.
