Reports from the Scottish Sun in September indicated that Scott Brown extending his stay at Park Head was just a matter of time. The player himself looked confident of signing a new deal and went on to say,”Me and the club we are speaking. There is no problem between myself and the club. They know I’m going to sign. There is no issues whatsoever. It’s just a matter of time for us to get it done.”
However, a recent revelation from Brendan Rodgers suggests that Brown wants to take his time before committing to a new deal. We all expected the midfield veteran to sign a new contract soon given that he is in the final year of his deal. The Scotsman even indicated that he would soon turn to coaching young players, but it seems like maybe offers from America and Australia are giving him second thoughts.
Reports from the Scottish Sun earlier revealed that MLS clubs Sporting Kansas and Minnesota United are interested in this midfield powerhouse. Rodgers went on to explain the current situation and said,”I said before, it’s just time, let that run. If anyone has deserved time to make a decision, it’s Scott.
“He has every right, if he has options for this last period of his career, he needs the time to look at that. That shouldn’t be taken by any Celtic supporters that he doesn’t want to be here. He loves it here, he’s been top class and we want him to stay, but like all players at that stage of their career, he’ll have to look at it for himself and his family.”
Given that he is 33, Brown’s next contract could very well be the last deal of his playing days. Of course, a player would like to maximise that time, and there shouldn’t be any guilt if Brown wants to leave to play in the USA. Quite a few players have taken similar routes in their career given the big wages which the MLS clubs can offer.
As for fans, they would be disappointed to see him leave but as Rodgers mentioned if there is anyone who has earned the right to make a decision, then it has to be Scott Brown. The Hoops signed him in 2007 and ever since then he has been the mainstay of his side’s midfield. During his heydays, even interest from the Premier League couldn’t deter him from leaving Park Head.
However, all isn’t over yet as there is still no confirmation about what the midfielder would do and it could very well happen that he might once again extend his stay at Celtic Park for one last time. All in all, it would definitely be a loss for Rodgers if the veteran midfielder decides to leave Celtic after all this time.
