According to recent reports, Manchester United have seen their massive £80m bid declined for Napoli centre-half Kalidou Koulibaly. It is understood that the Red Devils are looking to recruit a new central defender during the January transfer window after failing to bring one in last summer. However, their first attempt to land the Senegalese defender has gone in vain as the Serie A outfit are ready to hold out for more money.
Some sources have also claimed that Carlo Ancelotti’s team are looking for a fee in the region of £89m if they are to be persuaded to sell their prized asset. The Serie A prospect is under contract with the Naples based club until the summer of 2023 with a whole host of clubs looking to snap him up, so understandably Napoli will be under no pressure to sell.
Mourinho’s Defensive Woes At Old Trafford This Season
The Reds of Manchester have had their fair share of defensive struggles so far this season after conceding 20 goals in 12 league matches. Jose Mourinho needs to address some of his side’s problems at the back by bringing in a world-class talent in January and Koulibaly fits the bill perfectly.
The Senegalese international has put in a number of commanding displays at the back for Carlo Ancelotti’s team during this season which can be summed up by his man of the match display versus Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League last month.
What Will Koulibaly Add To Mourinho’s Team?
The Napoli centre-half is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe which is why United should do everything in their power to bring him to Old Trafford. Koulibaly is a ball-playing defender who can be a dominating figure at both ends of the pitch. His aerial prowess and incredible pace help him keep the opposition attackers at bay.
Should The Red Devils Go Back In With An Improved Offer?
There is no doubt that he will improve the Red Devils backline significantly if Mourinho can find a way to land him this winter. United should consider paying £9m more than their first offer if that means that they could sign him and secure a top 4 place at the end of this campaign.
