Celtic have had some significant success in tying down some of their crucial players to a new deal off late. Olivier Ntcham, Kieran Tierney, Tom Rogic, Ryan Christie all signed a new deal. Signing a new contract might not ensure that they would stay at Park Head until the end of their deal, but it at least keeps the club in an excellent position to ask for a reasonable price for their players if some heavyweight clubs comes after them.
Another deal could be in the pipeline now as the latest reports suggest that a new agreement for Scott Brown is pretty much done and the contract could be signed within the next week. Given that Brown is 33, it would probably be a short-term deal and we might see either a one or a two-year contract for the club captain who has been at Park Head since 2007.
Currently out injured, Brown has been the backbone and mainstay of this current side and one of the major reasons why the Hoops have dominated the Scottish Premiership for the past 7-8 odd years.
The midfielder is currently attracting interest from an Australian League side, and they see Brown as a marquee signing for a new franchise. Aussie agent Lou Sticca (who is on the job of luring him to Australia) believes that Brown can be a big success Downunder and would have the same impact which Wayne Rooney is having in the MLS in the USA.
However, knowing Brown, it seems very unlikely that he would consider a move away from the club especially when there is a new contract on the table. The midfield veteran has given enough indication in the past that he is willing to end his career at Park Head and even wants to start his coaching career soon which is again likely going to be at Celtic Park.
Big money can lure even the best of players but Brown is an epitome of loyalty, and we don’t really see him leaving Park Head. In his heydays, the Scottish midfielder even drew interest from Premier League outfit Newcastle United, but he stayed put in Glasgow.
Even this season, he has been a regular under Rodgers and looks good enough to take on the challenges of the league for another year or two. Hopefully, the midfielder can keep injuries out as that could really affect him at this stage of his career. Even if the captain does not play regularly in the next two seasons, the club is doing the right thing by offering him a new deal as someone like him can make huge contributions to the club off the field as well.
