According to a recent report by the Daily Star, Manchester United are hoping to secure the signature of Diego Godin from Atletico Madrid during the upcoming winter transfer window. It is understood that the Uruguayan international is at the top of Jose Mourinho’s wish-list and some sources have also claimed that United chief executive Ed Woodward is happy to give the green light after holding several talks with the La Liga giants over a potential deal for the South-American centre-back in January.
Diego Godin’s Remarkable Football Career
Godin can be considered as one of the best centre-backs in the world after playing at the highest level for many years with Atletico and the Uruguayan national team.
The 32-year-old has been bestowed a lot of honours during his career which includes winning the La Liga once and the UEFA Europa League twice under Diego Simeone. He has also played an integral part for his nation of Uruguay as he led them to a Copa America win back in 2011.
The veteran defender is currently out of action with a muscle injury but has already made some telling contributions at both ends of the pitch this season. Godin has featured in 15 matches for Atletico Madrid this term and has two goals and an assist to his name across multiple competitions.
What Will The Uruguayan Defensive Ace Bring To Old Trafford?
The Uruguayan international is vastly experienced and knows how to defend his own box. He can remain calm under pressure which helps him make some timely interceptions during matches. Godin has mastered the art of tackling and could be a fantastic addition to Mourinho’s backline which is lacking in quality these days.
Can The Mancunian Heavyweights Pull Off A Deal In January?
None of the United defenders have been able to put in a run of consistent displays at the back for the Reds of Manchester this season which only highlights the fact that Mourinho needs more help in January. The potential acquisition of Godin will undoubtedly bolster the Portuguese head coach’s defensive options at Old Trafford.
If Ed Woodward can somehow manage to negotiate a deal with the Spanish outfit to bring the Uruguayan legend to the Premier League in January, then United might just have enough in the locker to finish in the top 4.
